These books have been recommended by women who have attended my yoga for pregnancy classes who were looking for information during pregnancy and to provide well researched resource for labour and birth. All of the choices follow the principles of active birth and help to prepare you and you partner for the challenges of labour, birth and parenthood.

Making Babies: stumbling into motherhood
by Anne Enright
A thoughtful, intimate and funny book as a light but moving relief from all those information based books on your bedside table! Anne appeared at the Edinburgh Book Festival this year and delighted the audience of pregnant women and mothers with her readings. Highly recommended!

Encyclopaedia of pregnancy and birth
by Janet Balaskas and Yehudi Gordon
Although this book has been around for some time, it's still a good example of one of those 'Everything books': massage during pregnancy, yoga sequences for pregnancy and post-natally and lots of sound advice for preparing for an active birth by the woman who invented the phrase!

Birth and Beyond
by Yehudi Gordon
A real tome. Definitely too heavy, by weight that is, for bedtime reading. A beautiful book well researched with contributions from many different 'experts'. This is a great book for first time parents with lots of questions and answers. It has a good section on water birth.

The Gentle Birth Method
by Gowri Motha and Karen Swan MacLeod
Written by a female obstetrician with lots of waterbirth experience, Gowri Motha's specialises in self-hypnosis techniques for couples and explains her very accessible method in this book. A very useful book for those of you planning to labour without drugs.

The New Pregnancy and Childbirth
by Sheila Kitzinger
Arguably the best loved writer of childbirth books in the UK. This book is very comprehensive guide to pregnancy and childbirth with the emphasis on birth without intervention. Sheila is a very passionate advocate for a mother's right to labour where and how she chooses and a great home birth campaigner having had all 5 of her children at home.

Kitzinger's deep respect for the sacred in birth and her belief in women's innate birth wisdom comes across with great clarity. A very comprehensive and beautifully illustrated and photographed guide to yoga. This book is useful for complete beginners to yoga as well as for those with experience. It is easy to follow with guidance for each yoga pose and do's and don'ts.

Yoga for Pregnancy and Mothers first year
by Francoise Freedman
A large hardback book with beautiful photographs. Francoise has included aqua yoga photos and instructions and a useful section on labour and birth in the water. You will find good photos of birth positions in a water birth pool.
This theme continues into postnatal yoga and aqua yoga with your baby.

Another good read for those of you choosing to use water for pain relief in labour and birthing your baby. Roger is an English GP who for many years transported a waterbirth pool in his car for home births! The information in this book is clear and concise and very readable.
